Disclaimer: I am not an expert on servers and server admin stuff. YMMV.
I’ve purchased GridPane Dev plan LTD almost 2 years ago but did not begin to use it regularly until recently when I started working there. Now that I have had an inside look I am beginning to appreciate how much effort goes on behind the scenes to make it possible for us, non-tech folks to manage our VPS and other servers. A tonne of functionality combined with ease of use.
My first thought was to go with one of these standard IaaS providers:
- Vultr HF
- DigitalOcean AMD Premium
Initially I purchased a 60 GB SSD / 3 TB BW / 2 GB RAM / 1 CPU for $20 a year plan from EthernetServers that I found via ServerHunter. But refunded it after using it for a few days as I was constantly getting notifications like “System Swap Memory usage has exceeded 75% of allocation”.
Their support replied,
That’s perfectly normal :slightly_smiling_face: Linux loves to eat up vSwap and will prefer it to RAM very often. Nothing to be concerned about here.
which sounded like BS to me.
Got it confirmed by a colleague who said:
it moves to vswap only when RAM is full or being stolen
Then thought about going with Contabo but did not proceed since they apparently oversell.
Model: VPS S SSD
$6.99 / m
8 GB RAM
200 GB SSD
200 Mbits/s Port
Heard good things about Hetzner. Would’ve probably gone with them if I had not found Netcup.
4.15 Euros / m
2 GB RAM
40 GB disk space
20 TB traffic
Netcup is the provider I ended up choosing and it is excellent so far.
I went with this plan:
RS 1000 G9
AMD EPYC™ 7702 processor
8 GB DDR4 RAM (ECC)
2 dedicated cores
160 GB SSD
Costs 8.40€ per month.
Found and used a 3-months off free coupon (shared some further down in this post).
This is an overkill for the purpose but still proceeded with this since it gives me the freedom to cancel my $24/month Vultr HF plan where WPDevDesign.com is currently being hosted and move it here when Vultr begins charging me (my referral credits have been covering the charges so far). GridPane makes moving a site from one server to another ridiculously easy.
Netcup servers come with Debian out of the box but was easy to change the image to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, a requirement when provisioning custom servers in GridPane.
Feels wonderful to self manage a fast server securely at a fraction of the price.
Update 1 on 27 Jul 2021: Below are some 1-time use coupon codes. If you used one of these, do let me know so I can remove it from the list.
These Netcup vouchers can be redeemed at the following URL:
RS 1000 G9 (3-months off)
RS 2000 G9 (3-months off)
RS 4000 G9 (2-months off)
RS 8000 G9 (1-month off)
